What is Clinical Research?

A clinical trial is a research study in human volunteers that is formed to answer specific health questions.  Researchers conduct trials in order to develop new and better ways to treat people and to improve the health of individuals with specific medical conditions.  All new medications go through this process before they are made available to the public. The guidelines for a clinical trial are regulated by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and an Ethical Review Board (ARB) to ensure that the trial meets the highest medical, moral, ethical and legal standards. Clinical Research is essential to understanding diseases, improving treatment methods and providing alternative therapies for patients.

Why should you participate?

There are a variety of reasons why people decide to participate in a clinical trial.

  1. Many times these trials offer promising new drugs to patients long before they are available to the general public.
  2. Sometimes the drugs are lifesaving in that no current therapies treat or cure a specific disease or ailment.
  3. Other times the drugs offer improvements over therapies that are currently available.  For instance, a drug that must be taken once daily is preferred over an equivalent drug that must be taken three times per day.  Or a new drug with the same benefits may offer fewer side effects.
  4. Volunteers who participate in clinical trials know they are helping to advance  medical science.
  5. Volunteers have the benefit of gaining a better understanding of their disease or condition.
